Original US WWII / WW2 Army Air Force Officer Khaki Summer Crusher Visor Cap. A very nice example of a summer US army air force crusher cap from WWII. The cap is made of khaki colored gabardine in accordance with summer uniforms commonly worn in hotter regions such as the Pacific or the CBI Theaters. On the front is a spotless officer's insignia. Crusher caps were essentially a variation of the standard issue US officer's cap with the stiffener removed by the aviators in order to better fit their headsets in flight. This was also done for the sake of compactness where the cap could be rolled into a ball and stuffed into a pocket. This particular one has a semi-pliable visor, nonetheless made of officer quality leather, which indicates that this was probably an officer's cap that was converted into a crusher by an aviator. For the most part, the exterior of the cap is in beautiful shape, with minor staining and one small moth hole on the top that does not detract from its display value. The officer's eagle badge is in excellent condition, and the leather surface of the visor is basically spotless. There is a small tear on one adjusting end of the chinstrap. The celluloid inside of the cap is in dried and heavily worn shape but mostly intact without many tears. The badge is missing its retaining nut but is still held onto the hat by its pins on the side.
